CORE is a course designed to integrate a complete reading and writing program into the History/Social Studies curriculum. Students in 8th grade CORE have the same teacher for two periods to cover all the material!
This is accomplished by integrating the Common CORE Standards and Assessment for Learning.
The 8th grade social studies curriculum covers U.S. history from the events leading up to the American Revolution through reconstruction after the Civil War. These events will be broken into units of learning that have the students think globally and make comparisons to similar situation throughout the world and throughout time.
The 8th grade Language Arts curriculum includes instruction in a variety of writing genres including creative writing, persuasive writing, essays, response to literature and poetry. 8th graders are expected to perfect their usage, grammar, spelling and punctuation in preparation for high school writing expectations. The Writers Workshop format is used regularly.
Reading development is covered through selected novel reading as well as selections from the literature anthology. 8th grades students are expected to continue to develop fluency as they become more sophisticated in their interpretation of literature.
